Since 2011, the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez has actively collaborated with the Road Safety National Commission (CONASET), providing training on child restraint systems to leaders from different sectors in the Chilean society and to CONASET staff as a preparation for the new regulation.
The Fundación also contributed with technical advice, assisting the CONASET in the change of the Traffic Act that protects children in the vehicle, based on the Uruguayan regulation (where it was a key stakeholder) sharing best practices for its implementation.
Acknowledging this joint work, the Chilean government invited the Fundación, as a leader in the area, to support CONASET in the dissemination actions of the new regulation by the media, the community and the medical sector. Mathías Silva, Training and Institutional Relations Coordinator at the Fundación, took part of the activities on March 2 - 3:
- Dissemination and press conference at Vehicle Technical Revision Plant
- Presentation and Check Up Point at Andrés Bello University in Viña del Mar
- Training for staff of the Enforcement and Control program
- Presentation and Check Up Point for Pediatricians and staff of the Mackenna children´s hospital
- Media coverage, radio, written press and television
According to CONASET, road crashes in Chile are the leading cause of death in children aged 1 - 14 y.o. Only in 2015, 73 children aged 0 - 12 years old were killed in road crashes; 4,513 resulted injured in various degrees.
