The Uruguayan delegation was made up of its executive director, María José Pessano, and the training manager, Mathias Silva. During the mission, a series of activities were carried out designed to strengthen the capacities of Peruvian institutions in matters of child road safety, promoting the adoption of the safe system approach in strategies and actions in this area.
The mission's agenda included a Seminar on Children's Road Safety that was attended by the Vice Minister of Transportation, Ismael Sutta; the director of the Road Safety Directorate, Pedro Olivares; the director of Policies and Standards in Road Transport of the General Directorate of Policies and Regulation in Multimodal Transport, Ofelia Soriano; in addition to prominent technical teams from the MTC and authorities from the health, education, inspection, child protection, and civil society organizations, among others. At the seminar, which sought to put children's road safety in Peru on the agenda from a comprehensive and multisectoral perspective, the Global Road Safety Plan, the international and national context of children's road safety, and the promotion of safe school environments were presented. In addition, emphasis was placed on working from safe systems focused on children and adolescents, to guarantee the right of children to safe mobility in the country.
To complete the work agenda, meetings were held with the different technical teams of the MTC, where progress was made on key issues such as the regulation of the use of child restraint systems (CRS) in Peru; the involvement of the health sector in the prevention of unintentional injuries, such as traffic accidents; and the commitment of the child protection areas to add this topic to the work agenda, among other relevant aspects.
The agenda culminated with an important working meeting with the MTC Road Safety Directorate team, in order to outline the strategy and next steps for Peru to strengthen, within the framework of the project, children's road safety, in order to protect the lives of boys, girls and adolescents in Peru. About the Project "Strengthen capacities in child road safety to promote safe child mobility in Peru" The main objective of the project is to strengthen the capacities of the MTC staff and its assigned bodies for the adoption of the safe system approach in the strategies and child road safety actions, in order to protect the lives of boys, girls and adolescents in Peru.
