The legislative role for safe and healthy mobility

On 20 May, with the support of PAHO/WHO, we held the online seminar "The role of legislators for safe and sustainable mobility", to raise awareness of the key role of legislators in developing mobility with special emphasis on road safety.

The event, which took place at the Legislative Palace, featured speakers Alejandro Draper, President of UNASEV; Wilson Benia, PAHO/WHO consultant on health systems and services; María Eugenia Keller, PAHO/WHO national advisor on road safety and sustainable mobility; Britta Baer, regional advisor on violence and injuries; Ramón Ledesma, PONS advisor on road safety; Alejandro Morlachetti, PAHO/WHO legal and human rights advisor; and María Fernanda Rodríguez, President of the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez.

"It is an honour to be here today in the House of Representatives of the Uruguayan Parliament, where we have discussed the need to lower the speed limit in urban environments to 30 km/h. This is a request that the United Nations is making to the entire planet, and those cities that have already done so have drastically reduced serious and fatal injuries," said María Fernanda Rodríguez.

For his part, Wilson Benia commented that "this conference has been very timely, because it has opened the doors for an exchange between legislators to build a regulatory framework in dialogue with technical specialists in this area to make our cities healthier and safer".
