The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A / 74 / L.86 "Improving global road safety", which proclaims the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, with the goal of halving the number of road traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.
The Second Decade of Action for Road Safety will continue to reinforce 12 global road safety performance targets. The resolution also endorses the Stockholm Declaration, adopted during the Third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in February 2020, and encourages Member States to favor policies to promote walking, cycling and the use of public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport.
"In a post-pandemic world, we must seize the opportunity of these unprecedented times to reinvent mobility, making it safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable," said Dr. Etienne Krug, director of WHO's Department of Social Determinants of Health. "Road safety is central to realizing this vision."
The Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 provides an opportunity to build on the successes and lessons of previous years and leverage them to save lives on the world's roads and facilitate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
