On Thursday, August 3, technicians Mathias Silva and Marcelo Alborés from the Fundación, provided training on Child Passenger Safety to 40 inspectors of the Traffic and Transport Department of Colonia´s Municipality at the National Insurance Bank´s Conference Room.
Although Colonia is one of the provinces with the highest use of CRS with 32.1% (only second to Montevideo), according to the Observational Behavior Study in Road Safety in Uruguay (UNASEV-OISEVI), the percentage is still very low considering that the use of CRS is mandatory by law (Act 19.061).
In order to promote the use and correct installation of Child Restraint Systems, the Fundación implemented two Check Up Events on Friday, August 4: one in Colonia del Sacramento and another one in Rosario; in total, 22 vehicles and 30 car seats were checked.
The Check Up Event is an activity in which technicians from the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez, who have been trained internationally by Safe Kids Worldwide, provide free advice to adults responsible for transporting children in private vehicles on the correct installation of different types of Child Restraint Systems (CRS) and on how to transport children safely.
Through these activities, together with the Municipality of Colonia, the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez and the National Insurance Bank seek to increase the use of child restraint systems and promote a cultural change in the safe transport of children in the province.
Why should children travel in Child Restraint Systems?
Child Restraint Systems are the suitable protection for children when traveling in a vehicle. Their use reduces injuries by 75% in the event of an accident and prevents the child from being expelled, as well as avoiding their impact against other occupants and vehicle elements.
